Sitemap.xml vs llms.txt: What Is the Difference?

Learn why XML sitemaps and llms.txt serve different purposes and why most websites should not treat them as substitutes.

An XML sitemap is a standardized list of URLs intended to help search engines discover pages. It is commonly referenced in robots.txt and submitted through search engine webmaster tools.

llms.txt is an emerging proposal for a curated, readable guide to important website information for AI systems and other automated readers. Adoption and behavior vary by platform.

They are not interchangeable. A sitemap may list many URLs; an llms.txt file should be selective and explain what the site is about. Neither guarantees indexing, citations, traffic, or recommendations.

For a practical starting point, generate a sitemap from your canonical public URLs, create an accurate llms.txt file, and keep both aligned with your actual website.
